Kundasang War Memorial Park, Sabah

As I mentioned in previous entries, I can't wait to share with you what another Kundasang has to offer. So, this is it.

Other than Mesilau Nature Park and Resort, Kundasang Dairy Farm and Mount Kinabalu View, one of which must-visit in Ranau, Sabah is Kundasang War Memorial Park. The War Memorial is one of the tourism destinations located on a hill just behind the Kundasang Town (about 6 kilometres away from Kinabalu National Park).

This memorial has its own history. Established in 1962 by Major G. S. Carter, D.S.O. (Toby Carter) a New Zealander employed with Shell Oil Co. (Borneo) and launched together with Kinabalu Park. This was one of the first memorials to commemorate the brave Australian and British Prisoners of War who died in Sandakan and during the infamous death marches to Ranau during World War II. The memorial also remembers the people of North Borneo who risked their lives to help the POWs.

More than 2400 Allied prisoners died during captivity in Sandakan POW Camp and the 3 death marches to Ranau, near the end of the war.

Here the original image.

Within the concrete and stone walls of the war memorial are four beautiful gardens with the first two representing the fallen Australian and British soldiers.

The 3rd garden (Borneo Garden) is for remembers the people of North Borneo who risked their lives to help and assisted the Allied forces, during the Second World War.

Some modifications have been made on concrete and stone walls, and replace them with iron railings to allow visitors enjoy the beautiful panoramic around Kundasang.

This place used for ceremonies to commemorate the brave all Australians who served in Sabah during confrontation 1962 - 1966. Also those from Britain, Malaysia and New Zealand who served with them. Especially those who made the supreme sacrifice.
